Progress Reports

Agencies, organizations, and individuals are making progress in attacking crime. Here are some of the reports to citizens about what is being done.

Evaluation of Implementation of "Make The Right Choice: Stop The Violence (May 1, 2004 - Dec 1, 2005). Approximately 6,480 6th grade students participated in this program that included the "Make The Right Choice Video," anger management activities and "Not Cool To Be Cruel" bullying prevention video. Here are some of the comments from the 216 classroom teachers who evaluated the program:

• The information given is a necessity for all students.
• Very age-appropriate curriculum.
• Bullying is at an all-time high in the classroom.
• The video holds the students' attention.
• Reality is a powerful tool.
• Kids need to learn ways to control anger. They see it so much in their homes, on TV, etc.
• After the program, students really seemed to evaluate their behaviors and attitudes.
• It has made a marked difference in our school population.
• Tough topics handled in a professional manner.
• Your presenter has a great rapport with the students; therefore, they were comfortable talking to her.
• Listening to the student responses, I identified some at-risk problems not previously identified.

Helping Families Initiative News 2005 (pdf file). It's hard when your mom is away in prison. But it can be harder when she comes back and tries to start a new life. That's why a bright but very angy high school student kept running away and skipping school. The Helping Families Initiatives program intervention for this family included counseling and parenting classes. The daughter is back on the Honor Roll--she is working hard to someday achieve her goal of becoming a doctor. Her mother is attending college classes to make a better life for herself and her daughter.
